How counters stay in sync

On this page

When to use this: you want to know what actually reaches the other counters during an outage, and what still waits for the internet.

BitMed Link keeps counters connected over the local network.

When the store's internet connection is unavailable, counters can still exchange supported data locally. Some features, however, require an internet connection.

For what a single counter can do without any local peer connection, see billing while offline. To assign each device its own billing session, see multiple counters.

What syncs between counters

When counters are connected to the same local network, BitMed Link can share:

  • Stock changes — A stock adjustment made at one counter is available on the other counters.
  • Completed bills — Completed bills appear in the other counters' Sales list, including their items and payment details.
  • Returns and credit notes — Return information and the return status stay consistent across counters.
  • Held bills — A bill held at one counter can be opened and completed at another counter.
  • Customers and doctors — Customers and doctors added at one counter become available on the other counters.

These updates are exchanged locally, so they do not have to wait for the store's internet connection.

What still requires the internet

BitMed Link does not replace features that depend on the BitMed server.

The following features require an internet connection:

  • Store credit and balance information
  • Voiding a finalized bill
  • Purchase orders
  • Goods receipts
  • Purchase returns
  • Switching between multiple counters
  • Completing a bill that was parked while online
  • Dashboard, reports, and other data that comes directly from the server

If the internet is unavailable, these features may not work until the connection is restored.

Returns while offline

A return can still be created at the counter where the original bill was made, even when the store is offline.

With BitMed Link running and paired on the same local network, the completed return and its stock changes travel to the other counters locally. Uploading the return to the cloud still waits for the internet. Without a working local connection, other counters learn about it after cloud sync resumes.

Completing a held bill offline

A held bill can be completed on another counter when the counters are connected locally.

The other counter will see that the bill has already been taken by another counter. This prevents the same bill from being completed twice.

How to verify that sync is working

You can test local sync with two counters.

  1. Disconnect the store's internet connection. You can do this temporarily for testing.
  2. On Counter A, find a product that is available in stock.
  3. Make a small stock change on Counter A.
  4. On Counter B, open the same product in Inventory.
  5. Confirm that the stock change appears on Counter B.
  6. Check the Sales list on Counter B to confirm that the related bill information is available.

If the update appears on Counter B while the internet is disconnected, local sync is working.

Note: The normal sync indicator may still show Offline when the store has no internet connection. This is expected. The indicator shows the server connection, not whether counters can communicate with each other locally.

For more detailed information, open:

Settings → Sync & Diagnostics → BitMed Link Diagnostics

Use this page to check:

  • Whether BitMed Link is running
  • Whether the counter is paired
  • Whether local peers are connected
  • Whether the server connection is available

If local sync is not working, check the diagnostics page on the affected counters before contacting support.

If counters are not syncing

Check the following:

  1. Make sure BitMed Link is running on every counter.
  2. Make sure the counters are connected to the same local network (→ network and firewall).
  3. Make sure the counters have been paired with the same store (→ connecting the counter to your store).
  4. Open Settings → Sync & Diagnostics → BitMed Link Diagnostics and check the connection status.
  5. If the counters are still not syncing, restart BitMed Link on the affected counters and test again.

If the problem continues, provide the BitMed Link diagnostics information to your support team — see a counter is not syncing for how to read each row and export the diagnostics.
